Who is Malcolm Reynolds, you ask? For fans of the short-lived but much-loved TV show "Firefly" and it's major motion picture follow up 'Serenity,' Malcolm Reynolds is our beloved Captain. For an addicted genealogist such as myself, Malcolm Reynolds is a unique opportunity to bridge the future with the past. Let me explain...
It can all be blamed on Geoff Mandel (and Joss Whedon). Geoff is a graphic artist who worked on the show, and continues to produce merchandise for the 'Verse. Geoff created a "wanted" poster of Malcolm Reynolds. The information on the poster includes the names of Malcolm's parents. This is just temptation at it's worst for a genealogist.
For the genealogist reading this, you might be thinking "so what?" Well, here's the fun part.
Life in the 'Verse is set 500 years in the future!
What I have set out to do is pick up where Geoff left off. The ancestry of Malcolm Reynolds is partly fictional, and partly factual. I have created approximately 500 years of fictional ancestry which in turn is tied into factual genealogical lines. The fictional lines are chock full of hidden little surprises. The factual lines are gleaned from a variety of researchers, including my own family tree, with sources provided for much of the information given.
This project was done mostly for fun ... a stretching of my genealogical muscles, if you will. For fans, I have tried to stick to canon information where possible. For genealogists, I have noted where factual lines started by marking individuals with an asterix and making notes pertaining to the fictional/factual relationship.
